A Selected Chronology
1775 — Quai de l’Horloge
Abraham-Louis Breguet opens his Paris workshop, establishing the house on the Île de la Cité.
1780 — Perpetual watches
The first self-winding watches appear, harnessing the wearer’s motion to wind the movement.
1783 — A recognisable language
The gong-spring appears alongside the hands and numerals that become Breguet signatures. Watch No. 160 is commissioned for Marie-Antoinette.
1790–1795 — Shock and rate
The pare-chute protects the balance; the Breguet overcoil improves concentric breathing and precision.
The Age of Invention
1796 — The subscription watch
A single-hand watch is sold by subscription, making an ingenious, reliable mechanism available through a new commercial model.
1798–1799 — Sympathique and tact
The sympathique system links a watch to its regulating clock; the tact watch permits discreet reading by touch.
1801 — The Tourbillon
A patent granted on 26 June introduces the rotating regulator conceived to average positional errors.
1810 — The wristwatch
Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples, commissions the first documented watch designed specifically for the wrist.
From Sea to Sky
1815 — Marine chronometry
A.-L. Breguet is appointed Watchmaker to the French Royal Navy, a distinction grounded in scientific precision at sea.
1926 — Instruments for flight
Development begins on specialised counters for aircraft—an expertise that will shape the Type XX.
1954 — Type XX
Series production begins for the flyback chronograph created for military aviation.
1999 — A new chapter
Breguet joins the Swatch Group, opening a period of sustained investment in manufacture and research.
The Contemporary Laboratory
2006 — Silicon
Silicon is introduced for selected watch components, expanding the manufacture’s technical vocabulary.
2010–2011 — Frequency and magnetism
A 10Hz oscillator, magnetic pivot and magnetic strike governor pursue stability through modern materials and physics.
2014 — Extra-thin Tourbillon
An extra-thin Tourbillon movement demonstrates how historical architecture can be reconsidered through contemporary engineering.
2022–2023 — New instruments
Hora Mundi returns in the Marine line, followed by a new generation of Type XX chronographs.
